Numerology

Numerology is the practice of attempting to use numbers derived from people’s names, date of birth, phone number, etc to determine that person’s personality and destiny. It bears many similarities to astrology, and some believe that the two are connected. Numerology is based on the belief that everything in the universe can be expressed by numbers, and many religions have at some point attempted to integrate numerology with their beliefs, claiming that numerology is a message encoded into the universe for them by their deity/deities.

History of Numerology

Numerology originated from ancient Babylonia, but modern Numerology contains elements from many cultures and teachings, including:

  • Ancient Hebrew Kabbalah
  • Pythagorean teachings
  • Hindu Vedas
  • Early Christian mysticism
  • Chinese ‘Circle of the Dead’
  • Egyptian ‘Book of the Masters of the Secret House’

Many ancient philosophers and mathematicians believed that as mathematical concepts were provable, unlike physical ones, numbers could be used to discern links between everything in creation, and predict the future. St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354–430) wrote, “Numbers are the Universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth,” while Pythagoras once said that “The world is built on the power of numbers”. Pythagoras also believed that there was nine stages of the cycle of life, each of which was connected to a number from 1 to 9, and this was the source of all energy in the universe.

During the early stages of Christianity dominance of Europe many attempted to find link biblical concepts to numerology, resulting in such ideas as the ‘Jesus Number’, and the ‘Number of the Beast’. This practice is still found in some Greek Orthodox churches.

Modern numerology started to take shape in the early 1970’s, with the work of numerologists such as Ruth A. Drayer, Dr. Juno Jordan, and Lynn Buess. The work of these numerologists still comprises much of the belief today, and still used as guides for seminars and those new to the belief.

How Numerology Works

Numerology involves turning your name, date of birth, and several other characteristics into a series of  numbers between 1 and 9, which are then used to attempt to determine your personality, future, heart’s desire. Supposedly, numerology can even be used to determine what affect things like your house or phone number are having on your life, and how to overcome any problems they may be causing.

First, you have to turn your name into a number. In numerology, every letter corresponds to a number from 1 to 9, as shown below:

A = 1B = 2C = 3D = 4E = 5F = 6
G = 7H = 8I = 9J = 1K = 2L = 3
M = 4N = 5O = 6P = 7Q = 8R = 9
S = 1T = 2U = 3V = 4W = 5X = 6
Y = 7Z = 8

So, if your name was Julian Smith, your name would become 133915 14928. You should use your full name, including middle names and titles, such as Lord, Dr., or P.H.D, as well as nicknames, as these are all important parts of your identity.

The next stage is to reduce all numbers to an integer between 1 and 9, although this is done differently for names, as described below. To do this, you add together each digit in the number, and repeat with the answer, until you are left with a number between 1 and 9. Say your date of birth was 24/03/91. This would become 2+4+0+3+9+1=19, which becomes 1+9=10, which becomes 1+0=1.

With your name, you add together the consonants to reveal your personality, and vowels for your deepest desires. So Julian Smith is 1+3+5+1+4+2+8=24, 2+4=6 for personality, and 3+9+1+9=22, 2+2=4 for desire. Just as your birth name affects these things, so to will changing your name, although it can take between a few weeks and a few years for the changes to appear.

While the name shows your personality and desires, your date of birth represents your Life Path Number, which indicates the rough course your life will take. Your phone number, house number, etc will affect the path of your life, while the date of important events can show how they are likely to turn out, and what dangers to be aware of.

But what do these numbers mean? Although there is no exact definition, the generally accepted meanings are listed below:

1Positive: Leader, ambitious, independent, socialNegative: Can be opinionated and impatient
2Positive: Imaginative, artistic, balanced, peacefulNegative: Can be superficial and hedonistic

All numbers have good and bad characteristics, and all are equal to each other. Bad characteristics are simply challenges that must be dealt with, and understanding one’s weaknesses can be incredibly useful.

Please note that no person can be summed up with a single number and every persons makeup is the influence of several numbers.

For instance, let’s say William Atkins was born on the 5th of June, 1987.

First, his personality. 5+3+3+4+2+2+5+1=25, 2+5=7. He may be philosophical spending time pondering the big questions in life, like, but may be somewhat aloof.

Next his desires. 9+9+1+1+9=29, 2+9=11, 1+1=2. He may  express his philosophical thoughts through art, and may have a tendency to be distracted by hedonistic activities.

Finally, his Life Path Number. 0+5+0+6+1+9+8 +7=36, 3+6=9. Life will move him to a position where he can help others deal with the problems he considers daily, likely in the form of his writings or art.

This is just the beginning and barely scratches the surface of the study of Numerology. Almost anything can be evaluated with Numerology to find hidden incites. Examples include phone numbers, street names, nick names and may more too numerous to list. All this can be used to reveal information about people you know; be it co-workers, family, friends, or even business rivals, which you can use to improve your relationship with them.
